Designed to be used with Slate Digital’s Virtual Microphone System’s VMS One Ultra Linear Microphone Preamp, the Virtual Preamp Collection (VPC) models the tone of two of classic microphone preamplifiers in its FG-73 and FG-76. Outside of the Slate Digital universe, the VPC can be used with any DAW to add ‘analogue preamp tone’ to a track or mix, or to introduce distortion.
Each preamp uses analogue modelling technology to recreate every aspect of the preamp circuit, from mild coloration to full saturation and distortion. The FG-73 preamp module is ‘modelled on a famous British (Neve) discrete solid-state preamp that has been used on countless recordings’. It has a ‘bold, present, and warm sound that sounds great on any audio source and even full mixes’.
The FG76 module, meanwhile, is ‘modelled on a classic vintage tube preamp that has also been used on many classic recordings” (Telefunken) offering a ‘thick, warm, and colourful tone that can make tracks and mixes sound more alive’. The bottom end saturates in musical way, making it suited to bass guitar and kick drum recording
Both modules feature a Virtual Drive knob to simulate increasing the amplifier input gain while automatically decreasing an internal output trim, so it can set the gain staging of the preamp.
