Looking for something new and exciting in recording? Have a sense of adventure? Interested in the music of other cultures? These are the challenges layed down by Greg Simmons as he seeks recordists to join him on his next audio adventure.
Location recordist and guerrilla ethnomusicologist Simmons has room for a few more people on his sixth group recording expedition through Asia and the Himalaya. Scheduled for December 2010 and January 2011, the journey begins in Kathmandu (Nepal) and ends in Delhi (India), stopping along the way to make recordings in local studios, mountain villages, monasteries, farmlands and jungles.
‘We’ll be using some of the finest audio equipment available, including top-of-the-line microphones from DPA, dedicated location recorders from Nagra and HHB, and laptop interfaces from TC Electronic,’ he says. ‘Many of the recordings we make on these expeditions are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and some are of great cultural and/or monetary importance to the people who performed them. I’d hate to short-change that importance by using budget equipment. Team members are welcome to use their own equipment as well, of course.’
Since 2004, Simmons has spent almost six months per year on location recording the music of other cultures, and has gathered considerable experience. He’s also taken more than 40 people on recording expeditions through Nepal, India, Tibet and Thailand, so he’s no stranger to leading groups through these fascinating but often challenging cultures and terrains.
‘These group recording expeditions combine a passion for music and recording with a sense of adventure and a desire for escapism; they’re challenging enough to be highly rewarding but they’re not difficult,’ Greg says. ‘They’re also highly educational, not only from a recording point of view, but also from a life point of view. Rather than taking snapshots through the window of a tourist bus, on these expeditions you’ll find yourself interacting with some of the most fascinating people you’re ever likely to meet.’
