Putting PMC TB2S-A MkII Active Reference Monitors in his Elegant Musicworks production facility has left producer/arranger/composer Sir Gant happy that he has made a sound choice.
‘I heard about PMC from my good friend Dave Hampton,’ he says. ‘I got to hear them for myself last September at The Village Studios [in West Los Angeles] at a PMC Listening Party, and then at last Fall’s AES Convention in New York, where I auditioned a number of the PMC systems and settled on the TB2S-A MkII. I used them on a number of projects and was immediately blown away. My regular engineer, Neal Pogue was equally impressed by their smoothness and wide dynamic range.’
Buiding a production career on top of Chicago session work with Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler, playing and arranging Madonna’s first album and Grammy Award winning work with Anita Baker has left Gant with a keen ear for detail.
After moving to Los Angeles in the late Seventies, he became a first-call studio musician and recorded two Gold records with Bill Withers and Deniece Williams. As a producer he scored a hit with ‘All Night Thing’ by the Invisible Man’s Band, a song that he co-wrote. During this time he wrote and arranged songs for an impressive list of R&B artists that includes Stephanie Mills, The Spinners, Randy Crawford, Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire, The Emotions and Chaka Khan. There is a lot of ‘herd mentality’ in our industry,’ he says. ‘People use something that is currently popular – for whatever reason – but without really listening to what the monitor speaker can achieve on a real project. My PMCs are better sounding than anything else I have come across.’
Currently being mixed the PMC TB2S-A monitors is Sir Dean’s solo project, The Journey. A book to accompany the project, which chronicles his career, is planned for next year. ‘The CD project comprises four vocal and four instrumental tracks that pay tribute to Chicago musicians from my home town, including Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Curtis Mayfield,’ Gant says.
‘The TB2S-A is PMC’s first stand-mount design to incorporate our ATL – Advanced Transmission Line – with bass response down to 40Hz,’ says Maurice Patist, PMC’s Strategic Sales Manager, Specialist Systems Group. ‘The design incorporates a 1.1-inch twin-chamber, soft-dome HF tweeter and 6.7-inch LF driver with a cast magnesium chassis. The TB2S-A Active Reference Monitor offers outstanding accuracy, and is perfect for stereo and surround applications.’
