In a first for Unity Audio, the company’s Boulder/Babe (Boulder Active Bass Extender) main monitoring system sold into Russia has been installed in the Moscow-based studio of British music producer Robin Axford.
‘I had heard a lot of great things about the Boulder/ Babe system but was blown away when I finally heard the system for the first time in the Moscow studio,’ he says. ‘The depth and clarity in the mid-range is super-focused and each bass hit is like a thunderbolt – it’s so tight and accurate.’
Axford opened #The Writing Room in Moscow’s creative hub, The Falcon Design Factory earlier this year. He has been in the Russian capital for six years, following a long career working with artists and labels including Pixie Lott, Ministry of Sound, Universal, The Streets and Tom Hickox. In Russia, he became the first British DJ and producer to curate and present an English-language radio show broadcast throughout the entire country.
The producer chose the Babe monitoring system because he was looking for something that would enable him to work faster and more accurately: ‘Unlike with my previous monitors, I’ve found that I have been able to work full sessions with the Babe and not feel the slightest bit of fatigue,’ he explains. ‘Most importantly, these speakers have made my job as a producer much easier in terms of speed and performance – my output is translating better and I can make quick, accurate decisions on them.
‘What I love the most is that I can run them at really low volume and still hear all the benefits. They can also be crazy loud and, when they are, they’re crazy clean and sound effortless – great for the “client wow factor”. I have literally wasted years listening to and working on other speakers. These are speakers I can trust and I am so fortunate to be able to work on them every day.’
The Babe monitors come as a modular system, transforming the Unity Audio Boulder MkII three-way close/midfield monitor with its 2x 8-inch woofers, coaxial 5-inch midrange and 50kHz folded ribbon tweeter into a full four-way system with higher SPL and extended low frequency performance. The many configuration options make the system to serve as two channel, LCR and surround sound system for all critical listening applications. The Babe retains the sealed cabinet approach used throughout the Unity Audio range and brings the system power to 3.4kW. The external Unity Audio rack mount DSP speaker management system seamlessly integrates the Babe to the Boulder with the added benefit of precision on-board gain, phase, Parametric EQ, limiters and user presets.
The dedicated woofer is a single 12-inch/300mm driver with a 5-inch/130mm Hexatech external voice coil wound with a hexagonal-shaped aluminium coil wire for accurate music reproduction, durability and power handling.
