US producer, engineer, drummer, drum technician and arranger Matt Brown began playing drums at the age of three – just like his father. By the age of 15, he was engineering and editing at his father’s recording studio. He continued developing his drumming skills while learning how to produce, engineer, edit and record. Now he has a drum course, recorded using a variety of Telefunken mics.
‘I used all the Telefunken mics I have throughout the video and described them as my favourite go-to mics because of how great they sound. I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoy using them – I know I shouldn’t be surprised anymore, as I’ve been using the M82, M80, M60 FETs, and large diaphragm Copperhead condensers for years; but they can still take me by surprise when I first pull up the mic.’
Brown freelances as a studio drummer, producer, recording engineer and Pro Tools editor. His knowledge of drums and recording was forged in real-life professional settings, playing sessions for major record labels and corporate publishing projects.
‘I had another one of those surprising moments yesterday on a drum session with all of those mics in use – M82 on kick, M80 on snare, M60s on overheads and the Copperhead CU-29s on room duty. I pulled up the faders and without any EQ and minimal compression on the rooms, the drum tone blew away my clients and just made me smile. I tried the M81-SHs on toms this week, and they are definitely the next addition to my mic locker – just killer.’
Matt Brown’s drum course is released through the URM Academy.
