Taking our ability to make mistakes as its theme, the Music Producers Guild (UK) will present a panel discussion entitled Where Does The Buck Stop? - QC In The Manufacturing Chain at the forthcoming AES Show in London on Saturday 14 May.

While in video and broadcast it is standard for the client to use an independent QC check and test pressings can monitor vinyl music releases, these procedures have been bypassed in CD mastering. In general, the passage of a master to manufacture is out of step with any QC that takes place. This can and has resulted in sometimes major and costly mistakes

The discussion recognises the growing use of third-party manufacture and distribution and the consequent issues of delivery formats. With delivery via FTP, there is a need for good practice for checking that what goes to manufacture is correct and who is responsible. The discussion, which runs from 11.15am to 1pm, will focus on the challenges posed by the new shape of the industry where artists, small labels and producers are dealing direct with manufacture.

The panelists:

Ray Staff – Award-winning chief mastering engineer at Air Mastering
Pieter Stenekes – Founder of Sonoris Audio Engineering, which is responsible for the DDP delivery software
TBA – we are awaiting confirmation from representatives of a leading UK CD manufacturer
The panel will be moderated by producer/engineer Tony Platt who is also an MPG Director.

This discussion launches the Mastering Group of the Music Producers Guild, which will be headed by Ray Staff. This group aims to outline what quality control is and where the responsibilities lie and to publish a specification that will be posted on the MPG website so that anyone involved in the process can refer to for good practice and guidance.

Mastering Engineers are welcome to join MPG and take part in these discussions.
