Held recently at Abravanel Hall, home of the Utah Symphony, Violin Celebration was a series of performances from more than 500 student violinists at the Suzuki Association of Utah (SAU) alongside featured guest artist Rob Landes. The concert was recorded and edited into 19 videos that streamed weekly as an immersive audio experience to Landes’ 3.62m YouTube subscribers, as well as those on the SAU page.
For the audio capture, Tonmeister and University of Saint Francis Music Technology Director Miles Fulwider chose a selection of DPA Microphones.
With the calibre of the performers to consider, and such a large potential audience, Fulwider chose DPA Microphones’ 4006 Omnidirectional, 4099 Core Instrument, 5100 Surround, 4011 Cardioid, 4041 Omnidirectional Large Diaphragm, 4015 Wide Cardioid, 4098 Gooseneck and 2011 Cardioid Twin Diaphragm microphones, which were installed throughout the venue or mounted on the instruments.
Fulwider said he knew that DPA mics would not only be up to the challenge of the recording, but also accurately portray the intensity of the music.
‘Recording 500 musicians performing simultaneously results in a lot of sound intensity in a designated space,’ he explains. ‘I wanted to be able to capture this without colouration or additional hype in the mixing process. The hall also provides such an incredible sounding environment for this type of performance, and I knew DPA microphones could capture what we were all hearing and experiencing in the hall.’
