DiGiCo’s SD10B broadcast mixing console has recently won a placement in a Danish outside broadcast truck, following a refit.
The vehicle was recently acquired and upgraded by recording engineer and producer Henrik Nilsson to provide a versatile OB service. Called Audiotruck dk, it now has a digital audio infrastructure handling audio via both Madi and Optocore. Two DiGiCo D-Racks are optically connected to the SD10B console. Meanwhile, Madi signals are routed via the truck’s Madi splitter system to the SD10B.
The equipment was installed by Danish audio specialist Soundware in less than a day: ‘The truck came in to Soundware in the morning without equipment and left the same evening with a plug-and-play system,’ says company’s Kim Johansen. ‘From here it went straight to the SPOT festival in Aarhus, where it was used to record the performances on two of the stages.
The two festival stages were equipped with DiGiCo SD7 consoles and DiGiRacks, supplied by DPA SoundCo, so it was straightforward for Henrik to pick up the Madi lines from each stage. The console was used to mix the show for live broadcast, routing up to 256 channels of digital audio to a Macintosh-based recording system running Steinberg Nuendo.
Prior to going mobile, Nilsson has recorded and mixed a variety of high profile live concerts for broadcast, including Metallica, Jean Michel Jarre, Massive Attack, Robbie Williams, the Roskilde and Skanderborg festivals.
‘Although Henrik is a very experienced studio engineer, he had never operated a DiGiCo console before and was amazed with its ease of use,’ says Johansen. ‘The SD10B has not only given Audiotruck.dk a cutting-edge technical specification, it has also made it very intuitive to use. This is extremely valuable in the high-pressure world of outside broadcast.’
