Word from the R&D department at Australian company Quest is that the first models in the new HPI line of high-performance range of speakers are nearing completion.

Their development has been underway for the past 12 months, and the speakers will be completely designed in Australia. Of the two speaker enclosures that are nearing completion, one uses a single 10-inch driver, while the other is a dual 10-inch design, each with a single 1.4-inch compression horn. An 8-inch driver version is also in the pipeline as is a matching sub. ‘These are full-range boxes, from 60hz to 20kHz,’ Product Development Manager Guillaume Boda said. ‘In providing a large horn, we're focusing on delivering a speaker with exceptional vocal projection.’

The design allows enclosures to be stacked in a modular fashion horizontally to offer a multi-purpose box ‘that holds its own against speakers costing several times as much’.

One of the key features of the HPI series is an Aluminium handle surrounding the back of the chassis. ‘The thick metal handle constricts the unit from three sides making it both easy to carry and reducing enclosure vibration,’ Boda says. ‘It will also act as a mounting point for our new mounting brackets which will be a completely different take on current chassis mounts in the marketplace.’

Boda also suggested that the new speakers are part of a range of products on the development list. None have been announced, but they promise to be ‘truly unique designs’.
