Designed as a luxury ‘destination’ recording studio by Carl Tatz Design (CTD) for multi-platinum songwriter and producer/engineer Sammy Mitchell, Black Cat features creature-comforts dovetailed with unmatched monitoring performance in an outstanding PhantomFocus MixRoom Studio.
From Oklahoma City, Mitchell had moved to Nashville in 2011 after a touring band he was in disbanded, subsequently finding success with a song he co-wrote, produced, recorded and played on called ‘One Number Away’, for country star Luke Combs.
Black Cat was built from the ground up in a pastoral setting near Leiper’s Fork just outside of Nashville, Tennessee, as a barn-themed structure. Mitchell hired Carl Tatz Design to design a studio to feature an acoustically neutral tracking room with two signature CTD overdub booths, a utility room, amplifier room, a comfortable lounge and kitchenette, and the pièce de résistance PhantomFocus MixRoom.
The MixRoom features a top-of-the-line CTD PFM UHD-1000 Monitor System with primary and secondary sweet spots, PhantomFocus eChairs, AcousticLens wall treatment and an Axial Mode Absorber rear wall, along with an API 1608 analogue inline mixing console, extensive complement of outboard, and a wide selection of stompboxes.
The other half of the barn is a full two-storey residence for out-of-town clients and is separated by a large breezeway that facilitates privacy and easy load-ins.
‘I spent quite a bit of time listening to music over this system, opened up some old projects and started mixing a bit as well,’ says Black Cat studio owner Sammy Mitchell. ‘I can’t believe what I’m experiencing, every nuance can be heard and I get a clear visual representation of every move. It’s truly unbelievable.
‘This studio is a work of art; it’s been a once in a lifetime experience watching Carl and his team put this place together. I can’t thank them enough.’
