Finding problems with the consistency of its audio output, Philippines television network Associated Broadcasting Company (TV5) has turned to Jünger Audio’s Level Magic technology.
Although most of TV5’s output goes through terrestrial transmission, the broadcaster transmits through different cable operators in the country, with several relay stations in major cities. In order to level its audio transmission, TV5’s engineers specified a Jünger Audio C8000 Level Magic system, which was supplied by Conversance Systems Network Solutions via Jünger Audio Asia.
Now with more than 11 per cent of the national market, TV5 is the third largest station in the Philippines, and delivers programming to various cable operators throughout the country. The operation is currently owned by MediaQuest Holdings Ic (a subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company) TV5 recently undertook a complete re-branding, substantially increasing its audience share. The station’s main facilities and transmitter are located in Quezon City, from where it delivers locally produced news, public affairs and entertainment programmes throughout the country. The network is aiming to expand over the coming year to cover more Filipino viewers, not only in the country but also the Filipino communities in the Middle East, US and Europe.
The system incorporates Jünger Audio’s adaptive loudness algorithm. This uses a Multi-Loop dynamic range control principle where slow changes (AGC), fast changes (Transient processing) and Look Ahead peak limiting are handled simultaneously, thus offering level management with exceptionally high audio quality and without coloration, pumping, breathing, distortion or modulation effects. The C8000 ensemble of frames, I/O interfaces and DSPs can be tailored to suit the different processing requirements of individual broadcasters. In TV5’s case the system incorporates an HD-SDI interface, which is specifically aimed at satellite, IPTV or cable re-broadcasters who are struggling with sync and loudness issues when re- broadcasting incoming signals.
‘We have installed it in our Technical Operations Centre, after the playout server and before distribution,’ says Ed Castillo, TV5 Director of Engineering. ‘It has made a dramatic change to our audio output and its dynamic processing has impressed our engineers because it gives such a quick response.’
He adds that TV5 is so impressed with the results it has achieved with Jünger Audio’s Level Magic technology that it plans to invest in more units in the future: ‘Level Magic has made a noticeable difference to our audio quality and we are looking forward to making this equipment part of the ongoing expansion and improvement of our system.’
