Having led Southeast Asia into DAB, MediaCorp is now ready to discontinue its Digital Audio Broadcasting service in December.
Widely regarded as a digital successor to FM, DAB was launched in November 1999 but is now itself being eclipsed by technology that is able to support radio deliver via the internet and mobile devices. Singapore-based MediaCorp reports that growth in DAB listenership has stalled against the uptake of internet radio and its MeRadio phone app.
‘As a commercial outfit, MediaCorp needs to channel resources where the growth engines are,’ the broadcaster says.
