Opened in early 2012, the Jurmala Dance Center is the Latvia’s first professional and fully-equipped dance studio. With attention to quality that extends from the floor and surroundings to the sound and lighting, the facility aims to recreate the feeling of being on a real stage for the students.

Jurmala offers dance lessons for every taste, from classic and ballet to club dance and hip-hop, so the sound system has to be able to cope with every eventuality. Audiovisual company Unique was invited to design and install the audio and intelligent lighting, and asked to provide a powerful and systems that are easy to use and offer long-term reliability. The solution involved using Tannoy loudspeakers throughout.

Jurmala Dance Centre has two main dance halls. The largest (140m²) is equipped with four Tannoy VX 8s supplemented with two VS 15BP subwoofers. The VX 8 is an evolution of the successful V8, renowned for its performance and versatility. It provides a compact and punchy solution for small-to-medium scale performance sound reinforcement –like JDC. The overall audio system is powered by an APart Champ 3D digital amplifiers with an American Audio UCD200 CD/USB/MP3 player as source. The smaller hall (67m²) had a similar system, with two VX 8s and one VS 15BP sub.

In the corridors, changing rooms, lobby and gym, Unique went for a mix of Tannoy’s CVS 6 in-ceiling loudspeakers and the DVS Series, complemented with a TS 10 subwoofer. The system is again powered by APart amplifiers.

‘We chose Tannoy because of the compact design and superior sound offered by their new VX series loudspeakers,’ says Rihards Rubenis of Unique. ‘They are doing the job very well, and to be honest, even we were surprised at the clarity and power the system delivers to the dancefloor.

‘We used the Tannoy DVS 6 for Gym Hall together with a Tannoy TS 10 subwoofer, and I have to admit that the sound in there is like in a nightclub – massive and clear. For a price vs performance ration, the DVS is unparalled. The CVS 6 loudspeakers were used for other rooms, and they are perfect for background music.’

‘Our goal was to have a powerful and crystal clear sound in main dance halls,’ says Vera Sidorova, Director of the Jurmala Dance Center. ‘When we heard the Tannoy audio system installed, it was clear that the goal had been reached. The Tannoy loudspeaker system literally fill the dance halls with outstanding sound. What we liked so much is that the sound is not disturbing, it is soft but powerful, and that is a perfect combination for our students.’
