With loudness high on the agenda for broadcasters, gamers and recording studios, a selection of Heads of Audio, Chief Engineers, Dubbing Mixers and various other audio professionals gathered in Soho recently for a loudness conference convened by the UK Screen Association. The reason for the event was to inform its attendees of the Digital Production Partnership’s (DPP) objectives in the implementation of the EBU’s loudness specification R128.

Andy Quested, Head of Technology, BBC HD & 3D, opened the afternoon with Why Introduce R128 for UK Broadcast?, a question on many of the delegates’ minds.

There were two panel discussions, the first panel, Mixing for R128 included Andy Payne from SIS Live, Mark Owen of Evolutions, Prime Focus’ Ben Hooper and Steve Cookman from Molinaire. The second, Implementing R128 in UK Broadcast, featured panelists Kevin Burrow, Chief Technology Officer for Broadcast and Distribution at Channel 4; BBC’s Andy Quested and Martin Black, Senior Sound Consultant (Multi-Channel Audio) at BSkyB. There were many lively questions from the floor.

RTW and Jünger Audio had their EBU R128 compliant loudness measurement and management products available for demonstration in the breaks and the session closed with a buffet and drinks.
