Along with the 80 different beers available at Liverpool’s Bierkeller, the real attraction is the live Oompah Band. Providing the sound for the main hall is a Traction Sound loudspeaker system installed by ProScreens.
The Bierkeller Entertainment Complex is located in the thriving Liverpool One, in a large concrete room with hard reflective surfaces that give a predictably difficult acoustic environment.
‘The Traction Sound SDS range has low vertical dispersion which is perfect for acoustically difficult venues,’ says Paul Atherton of RW Salt. ‘You get less energy bouncing off reflective surfaces meaning better clarity throughout the hall.
Also, because of the long throw of the loudspeakers, we were able to get away with fewer fill speakers – which helped get the project in on budget.’
Central to the Bierkeller’s brand is its atmosphere – relaxed and fun. The venue’s management were clear about the role sound plays: ‘We often underestimate how much processing our brain does when listening,’ says Traction Sound’s Billy Wood. ‘If you have lots of reverberation and distortion, we have to think harder to unscramble everything. This extra thinking makes us tired and stressed, putting us in a bad mood. Compression drivers inherently distort due to diaphragm break up and wave steepening. We use an array of soft dome tweeters instead, giving us less distortion and happier listeners. And after all, happy people is what the Bierkeller is all about.’
The front of house system in the main hall comprises four Traction Sound SDS12i Kodiak speakers partnered with four BR18 Panda subs. Their are also four SDS8i Gobi loudspeakers for delay/fill. All loudspeakers are passive and powered by QSC RMX amplifiers, with loudspeaker managementhandled by an Allen & Heath iDR matrix mixer.
