A Japanese astronaut has shot the first 4K video footage to be taken in space for a programme aired on NHK.
Using a reig designed for shooting the comet, astronaut Koichi Wakata captured footage of the comet ISON and aurora using the ultra-high definition format from the International Space Station (ISS). ‘I was surprised by the beauty and clarity of views on the monitor when I was taking 4K images of ISON and the aurora,’ he reported. ‘From the ISS, you can see the depth of star-filled space in 3D perspective, and you can feel just how enormous space is.’
The 4K broadcast provided four times the pixel count of current HDTV, and is more than eight times more sensitive.
