The Shanghai Synergy Culture & Entertainment Group has upgraded its music recording studio with a new SSL Duality console, Pro Tools and outboard equipment installed by Langdale Technical Consulting – and, for the first time in China, the wiring is exclusively Blue Series Van Damme cable from VDC Trading.
Shanghai Synergy is a music entertainment and media company headquartered in Shanghai, and is also China’s largest music industry media group. The company is owned by one of the largest media conglomerates in China – The Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group. Its flagship studio was built in around 1985, and was in dire need of refurbishment.
Contact was made with famed lighting and sound designer David Parry, who worked as consultant on the project and appointed Langdale Technical to handle the installation. The decision to use Van Damme cable was a popular one with the Chinese technical staff given its use in Abbey Road Studios.
‘When I was asked to carry out the installation, I explained that I don’t compromise on the cabling,’ says Langdale Technical’s Bill Ward. ‘If you install a duff piece of outboard it’s easy to plug in another. If the cable is not first class it can mean ripping half the studio out to replace it. For that reason I always choose Van Damme cable.’
The difficulty of obtaining missing parts and cable at the last minute meant that the cabling had to be calculated and part assembled to arrive in Shanghai as a complete kit. ‘Having something missing didn’t bear thinking about but thankfully our calculations were spot on and nothing was missing,’ Ward adds.
The studio was completed at the end of April 2014, and has been busy recording classical orchestrations since.
