Several years – and a number of professional audio careers – in the making, the Grover Notting brand Principal Audio Monitor range of loudspeakers will receive its official unveiling to the forthcoming InterBee show in Tokyo. Made by Australian company Classic Audio Designs, the line is pitched as ‘a highly refined, no-compromise critical listening platform,’ and reflect the dissatisfaction of its designers with the market-driven monitors offered by many manufacturers.

‘The overwhelming majority of studio monitor brands in the contemporary market place are feature-based as opposed to performance driven,’ says Frank Hinton. ‘Not so Grover Notting, where the aspiration for the highest performance and reliability standards are placed before meaningless features, convenience or price point.’

All models use an infinite baffle, rather than ported, enclosures to escape the need for physically larger cabinets, vent noise, phase errors and poor control of cone movement below cut-off. In addition, all exclusively use the Bandwidth Extension Module (BEM) developed in Australia by HuonLabs. This fully passive technology intended to optimise the enclosure and loudspeaker design parameters. All models also use ‘the most unique and highly-refined transducers available’, and include patent pending technologies. All are hand assembled and are manually, as well electronically, tested.

Where many monitors use an amplifier built into or onto the enclosure, Grover Notting’s Mastering and LF Augmentation Series offer transfer function and power amplification in the form of a rack-mounted power plant. This allows for remote location, removing the performance, reliability and service compromises associated with integrated designs. The Universal Series is available with an optional remote power plant system.

All models are driven by a unique power plant system (optional on the Universal Series). The system consists of the most highly refined class-AB power amplifier that claims five new technologies, including a newly developed thermal management approach that does not require fans. Each 1U-high system includes the capability of offering an additional class-D power amplifier specifically matched to low frequency translation.

At the heart of all full and extended bandwidth models is a proprietary fourth-order filter designed by Dr Neville Thiele, using original techniques not seen in other filters. Objective and subjective (technical and musical) testing have been performed by Grover Notting that suggest this passive system outperforms other transfer systems, including other passive filters and active DSP-based devices. All models have been designed with significant built in head-room before onset of distortion. This ensures no aspect of a system experiences any unnecessary stress.

As a result, all Grover Notting believes its Principal Audio Monitor models ‘share consistent and exemplary voicing and imaging characteristics’.

A new website will go live to coincide with the launch.
