Supervising sound editor and sound designer Scott Gershin has installed Barefoot Sound MicroMain 27 monitors is his postproduction studio at The Formosa Group in Los Angeles.
‘I listened to my work through a lot of speakers, almost 20 different brands,’ he says. ‘I narrowed my selection down to a short list and after a lot of listening ended up going with Barefoot. ‘There are a lot of very great speakers out there,’ he says. ‘For me, I kept going back to the Barefoots, and then I wasn’t sure if it was just me. The interesting part was that for everybody I brought in it was unanimous. Everybody kept going back to the Barefoots.’
Gershin was one of the first to use computers in sound design for film, and has been credited with bringing film quality sound into the interactive entertainment industry. He is also an active consultant for leading audio and technology manufacturers.
As a veteran supervising sound editor and sound designer, Gershin equates the sound elements of a film to those of an orchestra. ‘I feel my job is to help tell a story with sound, to work with the director’s vision and take the audience on an emotional journey,’ he says
‘A lot of people want to hear low-end to get rid of it. I need to hear the low-end to make it translate correctly, to make it punchier,’ he continues. ‘The low-end component in a film or game mix is very important. A lot of times, I’m working in 2.1, 5.1, 7.1 or Atmos. I needed to be able to hear how the Barefoots would respond to a full range of material. Another plus for these speakers, which is not why I bought them, but boy is it nice to have those four different profiles on the speaker that emulate theoretically a super-high=end Aurotone tone, an NS10, and what they call flat and then hi-fi.’
During the postproduction process, Gershin invites the project producers and directors into his studio. ‘I’m trying to build my design, my mixes, my entire creation while listening in all the various environments they will eventually be heard. You only get to audition your sounds once. I want my clients to have the best experience ‘the first time’ they hear it. It makes our lives easier and more enjoyable, as long as it translates to the final listening environments.’
