The University of Wolverhampton’s Arena Theatre has completed a major installation of a 150-seat studio space, involving a Cat6 network and d&b audiotechnik E-Series loudspeaker system. Host to a wide variety of touring acts, as well as a series of jazz events, the Arena Theatre specified the E-Series ultra compact system after a comprehensive on-site evaluation by d&b audiotechnik.

Supplied and installed by Orbital Sound, the new system comprises db E12d cabinets combined with E15X subs and E6 delays for the main theatre, complemented by E8 speakers for the studio/rehearsal space. It forms part of a major refit, which included an 80-line Cat6 data network.

‘We had originally shortlisted the T-Series for our venue, but the d&b team pointed us towards the E-Series,’ says Arena Theatre Senior Technician, Stephen Payne. ‘It combines an extremely compact package with the dispersion and coverage we needed, as well as representing an easier and more cost-effective option. The installation formed part of a bigger technical refurbishment project, which included putting in an 74-lines of Cat6 data network around the building as well. We run a Yamaha CL5 mixing console with Rio units and ETC lighting network, and wanted to upgrade our infrastructure to support this equipment.’

‘Orbital Sound was one of several companies we contacted, providing us with an extremely competitive quote as well as the ability to handle an extremely tight deadline,’ he adds. ‘The technical knowledge is exceptional, and the team under Keith Hutchinson was a delight to have on site, working long hours and taking any challenges in its stride. We have established an excellent working relationship with Orbital Sound, and are currently planning some additional work to the network infrastructure, as well as looking at reworking the whole show relay and communications system for the whole of the arts centre.’
