Mixing bells (campana), other traditional percussion and improvised percussion with drums and synthesisers, Campana & Sonus Percussioni Ketoniche is an Italian musical project led by Julius Costanzo. Their work includes a performance at the Fonderia Marinelli bell foundtry in Agnone, Milose – Italy's oldest family business, and which produced the last bell to be hung at the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
A more recent performance called on an Allen & Heath iLive digital system for sound at both FOH and monitors. ‘The technical equipment for Campana & Sonus is quite complex, as there are nearly 60 sound sources to manage,’ says FOH engineer and technical manager, Francesco Apolloni.
‘Musicians are constantly changing position and instruments, so I approach the mixer like a lighting console, with all channels available on the lower layer, and use the upper layer for “live” operating to make continuous, on the fly changes to the mix.’
For the recent performance, the A&H iLive-T112 surfaces with iDR-48 MixRacks at FOH and monitors were networked via Madi. The set-up accommodated a wide range of percussion instruments that included 20 church bells, 20 cowbells from Sardinia and Lucania, an Italian sound sculpture, iron and steel drums, disc brakes, shock absorbers, trusses, pans, bells mounted on bicycle wheels, congas, a batà, digeridoo, marimba, five pairs of bongos, and more than 30 drums.
