The home of South Korea’s Ulsan Mobis Phoebus pro basketball team, the Dongchun Gym has recently been refitted with a sound system using the new HFA series from Next-proaudio. Basketball ranks highly in Korea, as s one of the country’s three major sports with baseball and football.

Dongchun GymLocated in Ulsan to the southeast of Seoul, the5,500-seat gym opened in 2000 as an indoor sports events and multi-purpose centre – it has a typical gym shape, but its roof is made to allow natural lighting. The new system had to meet number of criteria…

‘Top of the list was high-fidelity sound accepted by audiences and the team,’ says Tom Jung, Executive Director of Avix Tech. ‘And, the sound system design had to improve much more than sound systems the team has used in the past.’

There were limitations to design and install the systems. First, Avix Tech had to place 20 main speakers in front of the second-storey rear wall. Within the limited places for the main speakers, 20 Next-proaudio HFA115 powered speakers were used for this. HFA series have total 1650W RMS output, and 127.5dB SPL. They have a good directivity and networkable DSP built-in. The second challenge was that the sound systems are not the permanent installation. After the season off, they need to remove the systems, and re-install before next season begins.

Mobis also requested a four-point speaker and subwoofer system on the court. For this, Avix tech combined HFA115 powered speaker and HFA118sHP subwoofer at each point.

The installation also required a custom colour scheme, so all of the speakers have been painted in the Mobis team colour. ‘The speakers look like one of the hall’s interior parts, and audiences are surprised and impressed by the colour,’ says Ulsan Mobis sports team General Manager, Jerry Lee. ‘Of course, the sound quality is improved too – much, much better than the systems we have had in the past. It couldn’t be better in this space.’

With the 2015-2016 season, just underway, the sound equipment is ready to add to the excitement of the Mobis fans and basketball lovers.
