Known for its versatility, the743-seat Concertzaal Tilburg in the Netherlands hosts events ranging from small symphonic and chamber music to amplified concerts, festivals, musical theatre and conferences. To better serve this diverse programming and audience, the venue recently upgraded its sound with the installation of a new L-Acoustics Kara II concert sound system.
‘Our goal with this upgrade was to address some of the acoustic challenges we’ve faced over the years,’ says Concertzaal Tilburg Technical Manager, Pernel van Herpt. ‘The Kara II system gives us more flexibility to accommodate our varied programme while ensuring consistent sound quality throughout the hall.’
L-Acoustics Certified Provider and distributor Fairlight was behind the installation, which comprises main left/right hangs of eight Kara II line array boxes covering the ground floor. Panflex at the asymmetric 90° setting helps to avoid reflections from the walls while maintaining a wide stereo image. Six KS21 are centrally flown in two columns of three, giving consistent low-end coverage and benefitting from both cardioid and end-fire technology for minimised reflections and maximised rejection on stage.
Five 5XT loudspeakers serve the front audience rows, with two balconies covered by a distributed system of 5XT and A10i in white, to blend with the architecture. A P1 processor provides Milan-AVB networking with the LA4X and LA7.16i amplified controllers.
‘The new sound system is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain Concertzaal Tilburg as a premier venue for arts and culture in our region,’ says Pernel van Herpt.
‘We’re pleased to have worked with Concertzaal Tilburg on this project,’ says René van der Linden from Fairlight. ‘The new system provides a noticeable improvement in sound clarity and coverage, enhancing the overall experience for audiences.’
The upgrade will benefit a wide range of events, from acoustic performances that require subtle reinforcement to full-scale amplified concerts. It also aims to improve intelligibility for conferences and spoken word events.
As Concertzaal Tilburg continues to be a hub for diverse arts events and community gatherings, this sound upgrade represents a further step in its evolution as a relevant and appreciated venue.
