The latest seminar hosted by Sennheiser Middle East and UAE distributor, Venuetech included a live workshop and presentations on the digital signal path – starting at Sennheiser and Neumann’s digital microphones, through the interface with digital mixing desks, to final recording, live broadcast or loudspeaker systems.

A host of industry professionals were present at Dubai’s newly completed Meydan Racecourse Hotel to give the 40-plus attendees the benefit of their experience. Among those making presentations at The Digital Audio Chain – From Input to Output were:

Guillaume Ehret: Project Manager Digital Microphones, EMEA, Sennheiser
Ehret has been working in live sound and broadcast for the Sennheiser Group for more than 15 years. Following two years with Neumann in Berlin, He is now exclusively focused on the development of projects based on digital microphones.
Marcel Babazadeh: International Sales Director, Innovason
Babazadeh is a Tonmeister graduate from Germany and is the Worldwide Sales Manager for Innovason, part of the Lawo Group for the past two years. Marcel has worked in the field of large-format digital mixers in the broadcast and live environments for five years.
Alain Roy: Owner: Espace Concept & Technologies YouCan
With a solid background in live sound for all types of applications, Roy has developed the FAN Sound System, a complete digital audio routing solution for live performance and recording. He has long been interested in the development of new, cutting edge technology and now exclusively incorporates fully digital audio solutions.
Emmanuel Denoyer: Chief Engineer-Research, Espace Concept & Technologies YouCan
Denoyer is chief engineer of the research department at Technologies YouCan, a branch of Espace Concept, which specialises in consulting and in the development of products and solutions for the entertainment technology industry based on new technologies.

The seminar

The seminar discussed audio developments using the digital format and how this benefits both the listener and the user; in particular how the AES 42 protocol is having a positive impact on the capabilities of audio engineers.

AES 42 has been developed by the Audio Engineering Society and Neumann, and is now integrated into many manufacturers’ products, including microphones and mixers. Both Neumann and Sennheiser produce digital ranges of microphones that use AES 42 to send data back and forth from the control point.

‘The benefits of this shift from conventional analogue signal are manifold,’ said Mig Cardamone, Business Area Manager for Sennheiser Middle East. ‘Being able to run very long cable lengths without any interference or loss is a unique benefit of our digital mics. Having a very low noise floor allows microphones to be placed at greater distances from the sound sources, providing a better quality of recording and production. As well as the obvious benefit in audio quality when using a wide array of microphones, engineers will know that this will save them time on set-up and therefore allow more time at the console.’

The event proved an excellent opportunity for the guests to meet with fellow professionals and the Sennheiser sales team, to share knowledge and experiences.

‘We feel that this type of event is of great benefit to us as a manufacturer and to the industry in the Middle East,’ added Phil Massey, General Manager for Sennheiser UK and Middle East. ‘Being able to let the key players in the broadcast and live sound industries compare our analogue and digital microphones, and for us to listen to the challenges they face in the field, is key to the ongoing development of our relationship with the region.’
