Two new restaurants are the talk of the town in Worchester, Massachusetts – Byblos Lounge and Ritual. And their sound systems are part of the buzz.
‘Byblos Lounge is an upscale nightspot specialising in Mediterranean fusion cuisine,’ says Michael Lavoie, Powerhouse Sound & Lighting owner, consultant and systems designer, and the man behind the installs at both remises.‘The venue uses background music during the early part of the week and offers live music entertainment with a Middle Eastern slant at weekends. For this venue, we used 14 DAS Arco 24T enclosures with multi-tap transformers that downfire over the main lounge area and are spaced roughly ten feet apart. This distributed system is driven by a DAS Audio CSA-600T power amplifier that takes its signal from a 16-channel Mackie mixer and a variety of signal processing equipment. Low-frequency support is provided by two DAS Arco 12 subwoofers, which use the company’s new 122S dual-coil, 12-inch transducer. These are flown in central locations over the lounge and are powered by a Yamaha P3500S power amplifier.
‘At the stage area, we also placed two DAS Avant 12A two-way powered loudspeakers, mounted on the pillars at the sides of the stage,’ he continues. ‘These loudspeakers serve as the mains for the musicians or DJ.’
At Ritual, which also serves Mediterranean cuisine, DAS Arco loudspeakers augmented by the company’s CL-6 ceiling speakers were chosen for the house sound system. ‘During the week, the sound system supports various playback options,’ Lavoie says. ‘These include sound for the TV systems as well as an iPod. At weekends, the system supports a DJ booth or a single musician/entertainer.
‘Here, we used eight Arco 24T enclosures. The loudspeakers are positioned on an outside wall and are angled down, pointing toward center of room. For the restrooms, we placed a DAS CL-6 ceiling speaker in each area. A Rane RPM 44 multiprocessor handles loudspeaker management while a DAS Audio CSA-600T power amplifier drives the distributed system. Two DAS Arco 12 subwoofers handle the low frequencies. These enclosures are flown on an outer wall and are positioned to project over the lounge. A Yamaha P3500S power amplifier drives the subwoofers.
‘DAS provides our company a one-stop shop for all our loudspeaker requirements,’ Lavoie, summarises. ‘The company can support us on every project from small home theatre systems to large venues for production work. When I first heard DAS Audio’s products, I told friends and colleagues it had been a long time since I’ve been excited about a loudspeaker. I couldn’t believe the quality and power of the audio that came from my first demo of the company’s Aero line arrays during LDI 2009.
‘Both systems have performed with perfection and without failure. Everyone who hears, plays, or performs through these systems has gone out of their way to compliment both Powerhouse and our clients on the systems’ quality. We constantly get feedback after a DAS installation and we hear one consistent remark, ‘This is the best sound system I’ve ever heard or played on.’ At Powerhouse, we feel as though we have a huge leg up on our competition because of the superior quality we can offer using DAS equipment.’
