Regional broadcast rights to Olympic Games meetings up to 2024 have been granted for South Korea and Germany.
The only private commercial broadcaster with a wide regional network in South Korea, SBS has secured rights to the 2018 Winter Olympics, while German state broadcasters ZDF and ARD have for the Olympics for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics – the first time the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has negotiated directly with German broadcasters.
The venue for the 2018 Winter Games is is to be the Korean city of PyeongChang, which beat Munich and Annecy in France for the hosting. SBS has also been awarded broadcast rights to the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2022 Winter Olympics and 2024 Summer Olympics – the first broadcast deal with the IOC that goes through 2024. SBS already owns the rights to the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics as well as the 2014 Winter Olympics.
According to the IOC, SBS has rights across all platforms, covering free-to-air television, subscription television, Internet and mobile services.
