September 19 sees Al Jazeera English move to 24-hour television broadcasting on the UK Freeview platform.
The move from five hours per evening is expected to ‘significantly increase’ the channel’s access to almost 20 million homes (including nearly 11 million main sets) currently served by Freeview. ‘This is a major opportunity for many more viewers to experience our high-quality, in-depth coverage of events in the UK, in Europe and around the globe,’ says Al Jazeera English MD, Al Anstey. ‘No matter when or where stories are happening, we are uniquely placed to deliver fast, round-the-clock coverage, with quality, depth and integrity.’
Al Jazeera English won the title News Channel of Year 2012 from the Royal Television Society, over the BBC and Sky News.
The Qatar-based broadcaster is the first English-language news channel that is headquartered in the Middle East, and claims to be the world’s first global high-definition television network. It runs a free HD stream on its website for unlimited free viewing worldwide.
