Offering practical technical skills training and development in film, broadcast, music technology and interactive media, the new School of Media Technology (SMT) claims a unique proposition in training and skills development.

‘Our aim is to provide students with an education that truly matters within the creative media industry,’ says CEO, Neelesh Bhatia. ‘The courses are designed to equip students with hands-on knowledge that allows them to operate the tools of the trade and also understand the real world digital audio, video, broadcast and film. To be successful in the media business, students need to understand the technology and know how to use it at an advanced level – more than learning creative skills, they must develop their creative vision and turn it into a profitable commercial reality. This is where the ethos of the School of Media Technology comes in.’

SMT course directors recognise that time ‘out’ for skills training and enhancement is often precious, and have designed courses that are short and intensive – some are run in evenings and at weekends, allowing working professionals better opportunities for skills development and enhancement. This also benefits companies who may not wish to have staff away on training courses for lengthy periods of time. Also to this end, companies can also arrange training on their own premises instead of the SMT training facility.

‘We have tailored our courses to be hands-on and to work around the needs of companies as well as busy professionals,’ Bhatia confirms. ‘That means we run courses out of the normal working day, on and offsite. Each course is a stand-alone unit, but of course students can attend multiple courses and take them progressively to build up their skill sets like building blocks.’

SMT courses start with the fundamentals and assume little or no prior knowledge of the technology and its application. Thereafter, the courses advance progressively but can be taken in isolation or as part of a package.

Courses cover broadcast, film, interactive media, music production, communication, events and enrichment (targeted at mainly primary and secondary students in the music sector). One of the only schools in Southeast Asia that is both an Apple and Digidesign authorised training centre, SMT provides courses focusing on the principles of digital audio workstations using Pro Tools, video editing systems using Final Cut Pro, and advanced music production techniques using Logic.
