BassBoss has launched the Krakatoa, a large-format, point-source, full-range loudspeaker named after the explosive Krakatoa volcano, which is said to have produced the loudest sound in recorded history.

Engineered to cover the full audio frequency spectrum from a single point, this loudspeaker ‘combines seismic bass with crystal-clear highs and everything in between, resulting in a sonic experience that’s best described as concentrated intensity’.

BassBoss KrakatoaThe cabinet design is as compact as possible, with a four-way full-range configuration using four 18-inch drivers dedicated to low frequencies, another 18-inch dedicated to mid-bass, and a large-format, co-axial compression driver supplying mid-high and high frequencies on the same axis, all meticulously phase-aligned to form a coherent whole.

The key to achieving its performance is the Krakatoa’ds fully integrated amplification and BassBoss Mk3 processing. The system boasts 7.5kW of class-D power across five discrete channels. Eight hardware-accessible presets provide optimal performance over a range of uses. For the tech-savvy audio professional, the ControlBass app offers system updates, remote monitoring, access to furhter presets, and the ability to customise and save settings.

The Krakatoa boasts an broad frequency response of 25Hz-19kHz (±3 dB), a measured maximum SPL of 142 dB, and a peak calculated SPL of 145dB. Measuring 4ft x 4ft x 3ft, it shares the same footprint as the company’s Kraken-Mk3 Quad 21-inch Subwoofer and Makara-M3 Double 21-inch Subwoofer. With slider/feet on all four sides it can stack and interlock with either of these subs.

The cabinet is crafted from CNC-machined 18mm birch plywood and the design incorporates extensive bracing for optimal rigidity and longevity. There are 16 M10 flypoints and eight handles. A waterproof polyurea finish and perforated steel grilles protect the exterior.

Krakatoa is intended for a huge variety of venues and events, including concert venues and theatres. For outdoor festivals, unlike line-arrays, it provides solid, wind-resistant coverage for large audience areas.
