Outline has made five additions to the subwoofers available across its loudspeaker ranges. These include the GTO-Sub, MiniCompass, DBS and Eidos lines.
GTO-Sub
The GTO-Sub is a passive subwoofer equipped with two long-stroke 18-inch drivers to accompany the GTO (Grand Touring Outline) series.
Like the other elements in this series, the GTO-Sub features innovative rigging hardware manufactured in aerospace alloy – as strong as steel but weighing 66 per cent less. Sixteen modules can be flown in a vertical array (12 in the case of particularly inclined arrays). The design of the cabinet and the flying hardware are also suitable for cardioid arrays in both flown and stacked set-ups.
The GTO-Sub’s frequency response is 28Hz to 160Hz (-10dB) and the SPL of each single element is 145dB (peak value in half-space conditions), with extremely low distortion levels. The loudspeakers’ peak power handling capacity is 9.6kW AES. More information and photos are available on the data sheet.
DBS 18-2
Building on the performance of Outline’s Subtech 218, the new DBS 18-2 is a passive subwoofer with two 18-inch long-stroke loudspeakers giving a
28Hz to 160Hz (-10dB) frequency response and 143dB SPL for each element (peak value in half-space conditions). The loudspeakers’ peak power handling capacity is 9.6kW AES. More information is available on the data sheet.
A powered version of the DBS 18-2, the DBS 18-2 iMode has the same dimensions and mechanical and electro-acoustic specifications, but features Outline’s proprietary iMode technology and a class-D amplifier (3kW EIAJ on 8Ω). More information is available on the data sheet.
FlySub
Designed for the reinforcement of the low frequencies of the Mini-Compass vertical line array, the FlySub 15 iMode uses a long-stroke 15-inch driver and is equipped with Outline’s proprietary iMode technology and an extremely efficient class-D amplifier (1kW EIAJ on 8Ω).
The acoustic loading is calculated to take on the upper bass frequencies from the Mini-Compass, which is relieved of reproducing its lowest frequencies. This results in greater dynamics and distortion is reduced to a minimum. To achieve these results, the 15-inch loudspeaker (manufactured to Outline specifications) is fitted with a dual spider to enable the system to stand up to hard use and ensure long-term performance. The FlySub’s frequency response covers 35Hz to 550Hz (-10dB) and its peak SPL is 136.5dB.
The cabinet’s shape allows a wide range of geometric configurations in a VLA context, taking into consideration the mechanical stress for which the materials ensuring the necessary safety margins were carefully selected. More information is available on the data sheet.
Passive FlySub 15 is designed for use with the passive Eidos 265 LA vertical line array. The design features the same dimensions and mechanical and electro-acoustic specifications as the FlySub 15 iMode, but requires an external amplifier and DSP when used. More information is available on the data sheet.
Eidos
A passive subwoofer for the Eidos series, the Eidos 108 S uses an 8-inch long-stroke loudspeaker fitted with a dual magnet: a transducer able to handle 1kW AES (peak). The dynamics and precision of the low-frequency range of the Eidos 108 S ensure a ‘bigger’ performance than the dimensions of the cabinet suggest [25cm (9.84’’) x 55cm (21.65’’) x 50cm (19.69’’)].
Depth, precision and fast transient response are the key characteristics of this system, which, in spite of its dimensions, is able to confidently operate from the bottom end of the frequency range (38Hz) and can be easily positioned. More information is available on the data sheet.
