Flexible enough for drama, comedy, theatre and productions, as well as almost any kind of music from rock and jazz to world music, Sydney’s Riverside Theatre needed a sound set-up to match.
The system's selection involved a day-long shoot-out between different systems in front of an advisory panel of experienced audio engineers and consultants selected by the theatre management. The answer was an Alcons Pro Ribbon loudspeaker system.
Located on the banks of the Parramatta River, the Riverside Theatre sits in the Parramatta suburb of Sydney, where a three-level space with proscenium arch serves an auditorium capable of accommodating up to 760 people. Here Sydney-based Loud And Clear installed a system of eight Alcons LR14 ultra-compact pro-ribbon line-array modules and three LR14B double 12-inch band-pass line-array bass systems flown in a central array with two BF302 Mk2 double 15-inch stacked subwoofers. The system is powered by ALC2 and ALC4 amplified loudspeaker controllers with DDP digital drive processors.
‘The brief was to replace the centre cluster of the existing system with a full range, high quality system, with coverage to 98 per cent of house,’ says Loud And Clear’s David Betterridge. ‘With the wide horizontal dispersion of the LR14/120 loudspeakers, we nailed the coverage easily and their incredible fidelity caught the listening panel’s attention immediately.
‘We felt Alcons had won the day, after the first track had been played through each system,’ he explains. ‘We knew it was only going to get better when the panel started auditioning live sources and other content. The venue is very impressed with the system, as are many of the touring engineers who have done shows there since the upgrade. Needless to say, we’re proud to have the trust of the client – this installation is proof of the growing presence of Alcons pro-ribbon systems in theatres in Australia.’
