While many venues look to their sound systems to help create their identity, Avalon Hollywood has its own namesake speaker series. No stranger to conceptualising game-changing speakers, club owner and audio expert John Lyons is responsible for installing sound systems at some of the world’s leading nightclubs. ‘It’s a matter of being louder, cleaner and clearer,’ he says.
The historic Hollywood’s new sound system features Powersoft’s M-Force technology – and is the world’s largest subwoofer club installation to date. The design and build of the installation fell to Lyons and audio engineers at EAW and Powersoftt, who have worked for two years to perfect the technology.
Each speaker cabinet uses a 40-inch Powersoft cone, the result of the latest technological advances in electro acoustics. Lyons and EAW were able to use such a large cone by incorporating Powersoft’s M-Force moving-magnet linear motor technology into the cabinets, which enabled more air movement with faster response time, and zero power compression. The result is a cleaner, more powerful sound that was previously impossible to produce – particularly in the lower frequency ranges.
Powersoft’s M-Force technology offers an method of acoustic transduction characterized by a moving magnet and genuine push-pull behaviour. This application of positive and negative electromagnetic fields allows the motor to oscillate at an unprecedented level.
Each subwoofer (there are six in total) also contains two Powersoft M-Drive modules, which are used to supply power for the M-Force motor, the cone and each of the traditional speakers. The M-Drive is the most powerful single module ever made, and able to generate 15kW at 2Ω.
This adds to the Avalon by EAW Club.one system, which Lyons also designed in conjunction with EAW. The set-up was unveiled at Avalon’s Grand Revel in 2014, replacing the original Avalon EAW system.
In addition to installing its Club.one Avalon by EAW Sound System, Avalon revealed a transformed entrance and lobby, with a new centre bar and spacious new ground floor restrooms. In the main room, an extended balcony provides incredible views and new VIP booths. Above, 150 high-resolution LED panels wrap the stage and surround the club, creating an audiovisual experience directed at the dancefloor.
Throughout the venue, the original 1927 features have been retained and restored to their original lustre offering a timeless celebration of the venue’s pedigree while new multilevel lounges flanking the stage provide a stunning new VIP experience.
