A full monitor system comprising Unity Audio’s two-way active Rock close-field and Avalanche active subwoofer have been installed at the new six-studio Palama Music Studio complex of Swedish songwriter/producer Federick Thomander and Johan Lundgren.

Federick Thomander and Johan Lundgren‘We have The Rock MkII’s in most of our rooms at Palma Music Studios and we love them,’ Thomander says. ‘They sound like a perfect combination of many of the classic close-field montors. I can work for hours without getting tired, and together with the Avalanche subs they deliver both the clarity and punch we need for meeting the needs of our clients.’

Having had hits all over the world and a long career working with artists and companies including N’Sync, Scorpions, Kim Wilde, Abba’s Agnetha Faltskog, Arashi and Disney, Thomander opened the doors to his studio in Mallorca’s creative hub earlier in 2017. He chose the monitors to enable him to work faster and more accurately.

‘Unlike my previous monitors, I’ve found that I have been able to work full sessions with the Rocks and not feel the slightest bit of fatigue,’ he reports. ‘I can run them at really low volume and still hear all the benefits. They can also be crazy loud and, when they are, they’re crazy clean, and sound effortless. These are speakers I can trust and I am so fortunate to be able to work on them every day.’

The Rock MkII Professional is equipped with a 100W discrete bi-polar low feedback amplifier with custom-wound transformers and uses a 50KHz folded ribbon tweeter, while the 180mm woofer features a 0.2mm aluminium foil. The combination of drivers delivers a frequency response of 37Hz-38kHz (±3dB). The Avalanche active subwoofer is designed to compliment the Rock and Boulder models, transforming them into full range three-way and four-way systems, and extending their low frequency performance down to 22Hz.

The Avalanche uses a downward firing 300mm woofer, designed exclusively for heavy-duty subwoofer applications. It used a sealed cabinet design, but features a dual-chamber with an Aperiodic Vent. This delivers all the benefits of a sealed cabinet such as zero port noise and tight fast accurate bass reproduction. It also significantly increases the bass response available from a smaller cabinet design.
