Just south of the Rhone River in Geneva’s Petit-Lancy district, the Cimetière de Saint-Georges (St George’s Cemetery) is the city’s largest burial ground. At its entrance sits a stone chapel designed by noted 19th century architect John Camoletti – while beautiful, it presents a challenge to sound reinforcement systems, even when reproducing only the spoken word.
The problem arises from both the amount of reverberation (an RT60 of more than 2s) and restrictions imposed on the city’s historic buildings. In response, Geneva called on Studio Equipment CEO Terry Nelson, who quickly determined that the best solution would come from the beam-steering technology of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx Gen5 loudspeakers.
The chapel seats 150-200 people for funeral services and is relatively small at 13m long and half that wide, but it has a vaulted ceiling that rises to more than 8m. Services in the chapel are mostly spoken word, but also make use of recorded music. ‘The chapel is a listed historic building, so we were limited to a maximum thickness of about 3mm for acoustic panels,’ Nelson says. ‘That approach would have been labour-intensive, inefficient, and generally just a waste of time and money. However, we needed to find a solution. Then the light went on in my head, and I thought, we would change the sound system. Our experience with Renkus-Heinz in previous installations such as the former Grand Hotel in Caux for Initiatives for Change made Iconyx the obvious choice.’
Having successfully worked with Studio Equipment on other projects, the city staff was open to Nelson’s suggestion. Nelson installed one IC8-RN digitally steerable line array loudspeaker system on either side of the arch leading to the space beyond the main chapel area. ‘There was not enough space above the middle of the arch for an IC16-RN, and that position would have been too high for proper beam steering,’ he explains.
The IC8-RN houses eight 4-inch, purpose-designed, coaxial transducers, each with its own array of three 1-inch tweeters. This triple tweeter ‘array-within-an-array’ design reduces the distance between HF sources for greatly improved high-frequency performance with consistent, broad horizontal dispersion. Eight audio amplifiers and DSP channels control the transducers, enabling a single IC8-RN column to form up to four individually shaped and aimed beams, controlled down to 800Hz.
The IC8-RN’s low profile was key to minimising intrusion on the chapel’s aesthetics but putting the system in was tricky nonetheless: ‘The installation needed to be as discreet as possible,’ states Nelson. ‘We had to use existing cable routes, which was difficult, and no cables were allowed to be visible.’
Getting the system in place was just the start; Nelson needed to configure it to deliver clear sound to mourners in a space where simple conversation was difficult. ‘The maximum distance you can have in the chapel between two persons speaking and still retain intelligibility is no more than 2m – and even that is pushing it,’ he says. This is exactly the sort of problem beam steering was developed to solve.
Nelson portrays the process of tuning the beams as careful and nuanced: ‘I initially thought to use two beams but simulation in the BeamWare III program incorporated in Rhaon II software suggested that three would be better, so I went with that,’ he recounts. ‘I aimed the third beam further down than the others to avoid hitting the rear wall and used a different high-pass filter cut-off point for each beam. The EQ required was minimal, and the result is very musical.’
Studio Equipment also supplied a wireless microphone system for the lectern, with the transmitter built into its base. A small wireless monitor speaker will be installed for the officiant, largely as reassurance that the audience can hear and making shouting (which would excite more reverberation) unnecessary.
The system is working well, which comes as no surprise to Nelson, who believes strongly in the Renkus-Heinz technology. ‘The only way to get any speech intelligibility into that chapel was to install Iconyx systems,’ he says. ‘Since I learned of it during a special Syn-Aud-Con session at the NSCA show where the system was first introduced some time ago, Iconyx has represented the pinnacle of beam-steering technology, as far as I’m concerned. The latest Iconyx developments have only made a good product even better.’
The client and Studio Equipment are discussing the possibility of installing two further IC8-RNs, so that the system will be the equivalent of a pair of IC16-RNs, with increased pattern control down to 400Hz. The current IC8-RN system will be used as is for a while to determine whether the increased pattern control would be beneficial enough to justify the change.
