Miloco has opened the latest space in its London headquarters – housed in the Orinoco Complex, The Vault is a writing space centred on ATC monitoring and a Pro Tools rig running on an iMac Pro with UAD Apollo X8 interface.

The Vault began life ten years ago as a production space custom built within the Orinoco Complex for producer Stephen Street, and then known as The Bunker. Since Street relocated The Bunker to West London in 2016, the space has been used as a long-term dry hire room.

Miloco's The Vault writing spaceThis changed in the autumn of 2019, and Miloco claims the room to be ‘the perfect modern writing, vocal and production room’. Accompanying the recording and monitoring set-up is choice outboard (Neve 1073s, 1176 and Distressor) and new mics from Neumann and Shure, along with an upright piano, acoustic guitar and other toys.

‘Here at Miloco we’re fortunate to be able to observe the world of recording studios from every angle,’ the company says. ‘What we’ve learned most recently is that while 72-channel Neve consoles and live spaces the size of a temple are of course fantastic, sometimes an artist just needs a good rig, a mic in a booth, and a carefully curated selection of equipment right at their fingertips, ready to go. That’s where The Vault comes in.’

Comprising a good-sized control room and a vocal booth, The Vault promises simplicity – the control room is centred around a top-spec Apple iMac Pro, running Pro Tools Ultimate or Apple Logic X, and plug-ins from UAD, Waves, Soundtoys, Native Instruments, Valhalla and Antares.

The outboard has been selected to reflect the needs of an artist wishing to start writing straight away. There ares preamps from Neve and Chandler, chosen both for their sound and for their front-panel connections to help speedy set up. Compression comes from an 1176 and a Distressor. A USB keyboard is housed in the workstation, all connected and ready to be rolled out and used immediately.

The live room houses a matched pair of Neumann U87s, Shure SM7 and SM57s – more microphones are also available in the Orinoco Complex. There is also a John Brinsmead upright piano and a Yamaha acoustic guitar.
