Engineer/producer, Recording Studio Rockstars podcast creator and Nashville home studios defender Lij Shaw recently called in Carl Tatz Design (CTD) to renovate The Toy Box recording studio’s control room.
Featured are the PFM HD-1000 Master Reference Monitor System, Carl Tatz Edition Argosy Dual 15L Workstation and two PhantomFocus Porcelain eChairs. Carl Tatz Design custom acoustic modules by Auralex are used throughout.
‘My new PhantomFocus MixRoom sounds amazing,’ Shaw reports. ‘I get really excited about creating in the studio now because I can clearly hear my recordings and mixes. Even before the HD-1000s were installed, I could hear an incredible difference even on my old worn-out monitors. Carl’s acoustic lens design opened up the space, making the room both look and sound much larger – like the music can finally breathe in my studio.
‘Another remarkable thing about the monitors,’ he continues, ‘is that I can turn the playback level way down for quiet monitoring and the PFM HD-1000s totally hold the sound together beautifully. What a pleasure it is to mix all day when what you are hearing is so clear and helpful, and doesn’t tire your ears. Also, I don’t have to go out to the car ten times to discover that my mix was way off. I can get the mix right the first time.’
Acoustic and aesthetic enhancements were also made to the studio’s tracking room and isolation booth, in order to make them more commensurate with the MixRoom’s level of performance.
