A South African distributor is taking a unique approach to helping broadcasters make the switch to digital infrastructures. Johannesburg-based AV Worx is a new tech-focused distributor that aims to answer broadcasters’ questions about flexible digital networks by exploiting a range of value-added extras.

AV Worx CEO and founder, Anton van WykThe concept is the brainchild of CEO and founder Anton van Wyk, who has spent the past 25 years helping South African broadcasters embrace new technologies.

‘AV Worx has a very different approach to working with our clients,’ he says. ‘I have helped broadcasters adapt to new technologies for years by working closely with manufacturers’ R&D departments to design systems which adapt to a client’s changing needs.

‘AV Worx has decades of experience in consulting, design, pre-sales, schematics, commissioning, training and support services, all of which can be done on-site or remotely. In this way, we add more value than a standard box-moving distributor.’

Van Wyk began his career as a sound engineer in 1997, spending ten years at Omega Digital as Projects Division Manager before spending a further ten years at broadcast audio specialist Wild & Marr, where he was Technical Director. More recently, van Wyk has helped multiple community radio stations stay connected by upgrading to IP technology. He not only managed the supply of cutting-edge IP equipment, but also provided network design, technical support, commissioning and training services, as well as remote support during the coronavirus pandemic.

‘The aim is always to provide our clients with the best value for money,’ van Wyk says. ‘IP technology enables broadcasters to be more flexible, both in terms of equipment and geography. Our experience helps embrace that flexibility as well as future-proofing facilities. Every client receives a bespoke service, which works with the needs of individual broadcasters.

‘In this way, AV Worx is very different to a traditional distributor – we are just as invested in the installation as the client. We have years of in-house experience, and our approach is very collaborative.’
