NYC-based Malvicino Design Group (MDG) has completed work on the new Malonic Records studio located in the major business and industrial city of Monterrey, Mexico. Malonic is a Dolby Atmos facility that handles in recording, mixing and mastering, and has a Genelec 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos monitor set-up, as well as Ocean Way Audio HR3.5 mains and Ocean Way S212 Subwoofer for 2.1 mixing.

Malvicino Design Group completes Malonic Records studioHoracio Malvicino’s Malvicino Design Group specialises in recording studio architecture, custom acoustics and manufacture of audio products, and counts more than 500 studio integrations and commissionings over the years.

For the Malonic Records project, Malvicino, who holds a degree in electrical engineering, used Sommer MC-Mistral analogue/digital combo cable throughout for Malonic Records.

Malonic’s spacious live room accommodates the recording of bands and orchestral groups. Variable acoustics as well as wall and ceiling diffusion are the hallmark of the studio/live room area. All rooms were built with ‘a room within a room’ architecture. A private lounge and kitchen area provide a relaxing communal area. Nicolas Mateo is the founder and owner of the new studio alongside Pablo Garcia as chief engineer.

Architectural design and acoustics were handled by the Malvicino Design Group under the direction of its founder and Fabiola Mena. System integration was by Federico Petrone and installation by Diego Mejia for MDG. Equipment was supplied by Westlake Pro under the supervision of Stephen Banister.

The studio is centred on an Apple Mac Studio running Avid Pro Tools Ultimate, with NTP DAD Core 256 IO management and an Antelope OCX-HD 768kHz HD Master Clock. An extensive selection of outboard gear includes Bricasti M-10 Reverb, Pultec EQP-1A, Teletronix LA-2A, Empirical Labs EL8-X Distressor, API 500VPR Rack Enclosure, API 512C Mic Preamp, API 560A EQ, AMS Neve 1073 Dual Mic Preamp, Radial Engineering Workhorse 500, Chandler Limited TG2-500, Shadow Hills Mono Gama Mic Preamp, Burl B1D 500 series Mic Preamp, Lachapelle Audio 583e 500 series Mic Preamp and Focusrite Isa 828 MkII. The studio also has a wealth of instruments and backline.

The Sommer Cable SC-Mistral used in the integration assures accurate and precise capacitance, thus high transmission quality over long distances. The wire pairs of the Mistral cable have a pre-twisted drain wire and another shielding made from AL/PT compound foil. For added protection against corrosion and oxidation, both the conductors and the drain wire are tinned. The returns on the cable splices are easily recognizable by the colour-coding on the conductor pairs.

‘This studio is unique and simply astounding, with great attention to detail and especially durability,’ says Horacio Malvicino. ‘And it’s clear that Sommer Cable was a great choice for this new facility.’
