A new audio mix-to-picture facility has been commissioned by Dallas-based multi-platform advertising creative agency, The Richards Group. Central to its critical monitoring is a Genelec 5.1-surround 8250A Bi-Amplified DSP monitoring system, including the 7271A Active Subwoofer.

The studio was designed by the Russ Berger Design Group as part of The Richards Group’s Richards Outpost Post Production division, and also features an Avid Pro Tools HD|3 digital recording system and 24-fader Avid D-Command digital mixing surface.

Supplied by Spunky Brunone of The Audio DAWg, the Genelec loudspeaker system was chosen for the advantages that Genelec’s AutoCal automated calibration system and Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) control network bring to audio facilities of all types. ‘What you can do with the GLM system is really incredible – it’s as flexible as it is accurate,’ says Mark Murray, Audio Engineer for Richards Outpost, who researched the systems chosen for the new studio. Using the GLM software installed on the studio’s computer, he is able to refocus the Genelec 5.1 system’s sweet spot for anywhere the client is sitting in the room. ‘In that sense, it really allows us to personalize the room for each client or engineer,’ he explains. ‘That makes it a valuable feature for a number of reasons.’

Referring to the glass divider that partitions off the studio’s vocal booth on the right side of the control room, Murray claims that he can use the GLM to create a stereo image using only the right front and right rear speakers of the 5.1 system to give a producer who wants to sit directly across from the talent in the booth an accurate stereo image without having to come back to the middle of the room. ‘This ability to shoot the sound over to wherever the client wants to be in the room is fantastic,’ he says. ‘The great sound and incredible flexibility of the system really make this studio a great new addition to our facility.’
