German move to digital HD stumbles...

As German public service broadcasters ARD and ZDF prepare to shut down their analogue satellite transmission in April they are lloking for takers for ten new HD channels. So far, none of the eligible cable operators are prepared to meet their terms.

As ARD and ZDF are unwilling to pay a carriage fee for the new channels – a move that would save the up to €60m (US$77m) per year.

The new HD channels are set to launch at the end April 2012, with HD versions of regional ARD agffiliate broadcasters to follow. The aim is to have HD versions of all public channels on satellite.
