The BBC has sold its Television Centre complex in the White City area of London.
The new owner of the faility – wich has been the home of some of the Corporations most successful shows – is UK development company Stanhope, which has paid a reported £200m for the privilege.
The BBC expectes to be out of its former stronghold by 2015, after tranferring the bulk of its 5,000 staff to the refurbished Broadcasting House in central London and MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester. The sale is part of the BBC’s move to cut its property holdings by 30 per cent. The BBC World Service recently made its last broadcast from Bush House, where it had been for 70 years, as part of a dramatic technology update.
