Tascam has announced the CA-XLR2d Series of professional audio XLR microphone adapters for mirrorless cameras. The adapter is available in three configurations – the CA-XLR2d Canon Kit, CA-XLR2d Fujifilm Kit, and CA-XLR2d Analog Interface Kit for use with Nikon cameras and others.

As mirrorless cameras typically used for high-quality video shooting do not accommodate an XLR input for professional microphones or a high-quality preamplifier, there are limited options to upgrade audio quality within the capability of the camera itself. Currently, when high-quality XLR or lavalier microphones to capture pro quality audio are required, a digital audio recorder independent of the camera is needed. However, this method requires additional time to synchronise audio and video during editing and use of one more device.

Tascam CA-XLR2d Series camera kitsAs an XLR input expansion adapter for mirrorless cameras, the CA-XLR2d addresses this issue by enabling filmmakers and videographers to capture high-quality audio directly into the camera.

The Canon Kit (CA-XLR2d-C) is compliant with the camera’s multi-function shoe, enabling digital audio transmission directly into the camera with bus power supply from the camera available for a cable-free system with high mobility. The CA-XLR2d is also planned to be compatible with the multi-function shoe of the Canon XF605 Professional Camcorder. This combination provides a maximum of four XLR input cannels in addition to the built-in two XLR channels on the camcorder. Product compatibility includes the mirrorless EOS R3 and XF605Professional Camcorder. With the included two AA battery box and cold shoe mount adapter, the CA-XLR2d also works with existing cameras that do not have the multi-function hot shoe by connecting an analog audio cable between the CA-XLR2d’s analogue out and camera’s mic input.

The Fujifilm Kit (CA-XLR2d-F) is compatible with the mirrorless Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm X-S10 and Fujifilm GFX100S digital cameras. With the included two AA battery box and cold shoe mount adapter, the CA-XLR2d also works with existing cameras that do not have the multi-function hot shoe as with the Canon Kit.

The Analog Interface Kit (CA-XLR2d-AN) uses the included two AA battery box and cold shoe adapter to connect an analogue audio cable between the CA-XLR2d’s analogue out and the camera’s mic input. The CA-XLR2d will work as an analogue audio adapter to deliver high-quality audio to a wider range of existing camera users. Product compatibility includes: Nikon Z 9, Nikon Z 7II, Nikon Z 6II, Nikon Z 7, Nikon Z 6, Nikon Z 5, Nikon Z fc and Nikon Z 50 mirrorless cameras and Nikon D6, Nikon D780, Nikon D850, Nikon D7500 and Nikon D500 digital SLRs.

Key features:

  • Direct digital audio transmission via a accessory shoe.
  • Power supplied by the camera.
  • Camera mode for audio transfer to camera’s mic
  • Headphone mode: for direct headphone monitoring.

The Tascam CA-XLR2d Series professional audio XLR microphone adapter is expected to be available in Q1 2022.
