Since the early 1970s and the subsequent re-issue more than 20 years ago, API’s 525 Discrete Compressor has become a well loved vintage-style studio compressor. Building on the core circuitry of the original, the new 525A maintains the discrete audio path and expands the feature set for even more applications in the modern studio.

API 525A Discrete CompressorThe API 525A combines the company’s proprietary transformers, 2510 and 2520 op-amps, retaining the sonic characteristics of the original while exhibiting the reliability, long life, and the uniformity characteristic of all API products.

Key features:

  • Variable Attack adjustable from 15to 15ms.
  • Selectable Release Modes (.05s to 2.0s).
  • Ceiling Control combines Threshold and Make-up Gain.
  • Classic 1970s-style analogue gain reduction vu meter.
  • Traditional API discrete audio path circuit design.
  • 2520 and 2510 op-amps.
  • Proprietary API output transformer.
  • Balanced input/output.
  • Hardware bypass.

‘I have always loved the 525 Compressor, but wished that I could have more control over the attack and release times to make it more useful on things like drums,’ says Grammy Award-Winning Engineer and API Technician Paul Leavitt. ‘The new features built into the 525A really make this classic FET compressor an even more indispensable tool in the studio.’
